POWERPLAY: Virtual Reality Exhibition
The virtual reality iteration of POWERPLAY shows the works in the spaces they were originally intended for, in The National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo (NGZ).Playing with scale, curatorial methods, and physics, the works are presented in an alternative way to how they are received physically in real-life. The viewer is immersed in a distorted reality of the NGZ, where giant watches spin, and a whole room is clad in shrink-wrap. Highlighting intricacies and details within the works, like Kumbirai Makumbe's rug design or Scumboy's genderless figures, the VR iteration of the exhibition allows for an embodiment of the work in a more intimate way. Concepts are dismantled or broadened, and the fragility between what's real and what's fake comes into play while the viewer wanders through the to-scale rooms of the NGZ.
This video was made in conjunction with the exhibition POWERPLAY featuring works by Mr Color, Tito Aderemi Ibitola, Vincent Bezuidenhout, Scumboy, King Debs, Mbakisi Sibanda, Kumbirai Makumbe, and Isaac Kariuki. Virtual Reality iteration made by Christopher MacInnes. The exhibition is at arebyte Gallery from 14th August - 26th September, 2020.The exhibition will then travel in October 2020 (TBC) to The National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo. The Virtual Reality iteration will travel to The National Gallery of Zimbabwe Harare and Mutare (date TBC).
